A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's history.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. More than 80 individuals were arrested.
Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
State officials said no less than 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
