Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop this new product within a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company
The recent development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
