Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
