Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unneeded gifts might be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection could include objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date remains to be announced, although the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Holdings
These gifts are currently locked away in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been gathering dust for years.
The detailed catalog remains made public, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of official presents was reviewed by officials. The discussion raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
A Global Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from within her party, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
This charitable initiative represents a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
