That Gory Cartoon Film Ending That Haunts Viewers
Among all the mature cartoon movies I’ve ever viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the fear-filled ending of a explicitly bloody and deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, somber , often savage world with a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from a desire to push animation even more, the filmmaker stated that it was rather a try to express a widespread, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of each battle.”
This theme is expressed through a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a popular series of lovable characters.
Maturing in a community built around warmongering and the military-industrial complex, numerous these animals are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, due to a holy book that tells the bears they used to be masters of the woods, before these creatures forced them out.
Others have not completely bought into the brainwashing, and would rather sample narcotics and fornicate in the forest.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters display sexual organs and obvious libidos.
For one particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a path to control — and specifically to supremacy above his softer, kinder brother the character Tubby.
This bear is a bully , an apparent sociopath , and when terror takes over his group and claims his fellow soldiers sequentially, he grabs more and more influence on his own behalf, via progressively gory, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are enduring their own terror, as an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“In the early stages, it seems like a comedy,” the filmmaker commented. “But then it evolves into a more intense and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars commences resembling among the whimsical movies by a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a wicked pleasure in permitting drawn beings swear, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Afterward it becomes something more like a bleaker film from that artist, featuring progressively explicit brutality , a tangible relation to genuine suffering of conflict.
In the finale, it’s a complete extreme drama carnage.
The terror which makes the film a perfect Halloween viewing begins much sooner than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted gorehounds, for lovers of intense movies who desire to see something they have not viewed until now, and are able to withstand a plot that offers absolutely no punches.
View it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the finale will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
